Repeating the Cycle

 Chapter 34

Repeating the Cycle

The final process in the SAL Model, while not an official phase, involves continually recycling the entire four-stage process throughout your life.

The purpose of the SAL Model is therefore to continually "Rinse and Repeat" until desired results are gloriously attained, successfully maintained, and indefinitely sustained.

In Your Journal

  • Now that you have come to the end of your initial study of the SAL Model, what are your preliminary feelings and reflections?

  • To what extent do you believe you will use this model in your life, career, and relationships moving forward, and why?

  • Who among your family members, friends, neighbors, and colleagues could benefit from learning about and applying the SAL Model in their lives, careers, and relationships?

  • Who of all these associates would you be willing to share the material with NOW?

Self-Alterations

 Chapter 33

Self-Alterations

Construction Stage 4.6   Replacements, renovations, and upgrades

SAL Model Stage 4.6   Self-Alterations

After you have self-observed, self-analyzed, self-renewed, examined your purpose, and received feedback from others, the FINAL—and most important—step of Stage Four of the SAL Model is to formulate a new game plan and then TAKE ACTION on that plan.

This is done through Self-Alterations, or personal change initiatives.

Self-Alterations are akin to changes, improvements, renovations, replacements, and upgrades to a skyscraper and its surrounding property.

The process of Self-Alterations may result in only minor changes here-and-there. Or, it could result in a major revision of your Self-Blueprints and a significant Re-Visioning of your life's purpose and direction.

Either way, remember that as the sovereign director of your life, YOU are the one who gets to make the call in these vital life decisions and functions. As such, we at Freedom Focused urge you in the strongest terms possible to be serious and take full responsibility to rule and reign wisely over your life, career, and relationships.

In Your Journal

  • Are there any ALTERATIONS or changes you need to make in your life, career, or relationships that you have been procrastinating? If so, what are they and what is your game plan to begin making these changes real in your life moving forward? Most importantly, what are YOU going to do TODAY, or before the end of the week, to begin?

External Feedback

 Chapter 32

External Feedback

Construction Stage 4.5   Inventory and Change Recommendations

SAL Model Stage 4.5   External Feedback

As important as Self-Observation, Self-Analysis, and Purpose Examinations are, they alone are insufficient for enabling and empowering you to rise to the full measure of your potential stature as as self-action leader.

YOU and I—and everyone else on the planet—also need FEEDBACK from others.

As human beings, we all have the same basic handicap of being stuck inside of our own minds, hearts, and souls. As a result of this handicap, we cannot observe ourselves from the same external vantage point of others, which limits our capacity for Self-Observation—no matter how careful, conscientious, and introspective we might be.

Bottom Line: WE ALL have blind spots.

Thus, we all need feedback from others to gauge how we are acting, performing, and coming across to others.

As a professional seminar facilitator, I regularly received written feedback from my audiences. This feedback empowered me to continually improve my presentations.

Most of the time, I am not surprised by the feedback I receive, because it harmonizes with and corroborates my own Self-Observations and Self-Examinations.

On occasion, however, I receive a piece of feedback that completely surprises me, which is indicative of a true "blind spot" in my Self-Observations.

For example, once I was teaching a seminar in Utah where the high altitude, desert-mountain air was very dry. At the conclusion of the training day, one of the attendees wrote the following on my evaluation: "You sure lick your lips a lot."

That was the most memorable piece of feedback I ever received from a seminar attendee.

Why?

Because I had no idea I was doing it!

I was completely oblivious to my obviously distracting facial tic.

Thank goodness someone was willing to be candid and spill the beans to me on my evaluation!

I now carry lip balm with me when I travel to arid environments, and I keep it close by in my pocket or backpack when I am speaking, teaching, or facilitating. Thanks to lip balm and some helpful feedback that someone was courageous enough to share with me, I've been able to largely eradicate this distracting habit when I'm in front of an audience.

There are many ways to obtain feedback from family, friends, colleagues, and clients. From formal, 360-degree feedback questionnaires and written evaluations to face-to-face critiques in both group settings and one-on-one formats. However, if your supervisors and/or others are not proactive in ensuring you receive regular and timely feedback from others, you may need to take the initiative and seek it out on your own.

In other words, sometimes the best—and surest—way to obtain needed feedback is simply to ASK for it—point blank.

Doing so takes courage and proactivity, but that is okay because self-action leaders are inherently proactive and courageous human beings, so I know YOU have what it takes to go out on the limb to obtain needed feedback when necessary.

In the end, how you obtain feedback is less important than simply getting it.

So, seek it out however and whenever you need it!

In Your Journal

  • What might your biggest "Blind Spot" be in your personal life? What about your professional life?

  • Solicit feedback from two or three select individuals with whom you live and work and ask them point-blank what your biggest "Blind Spot" is personally and professionally and how you might effectively address it.

  • Journal about the feedback you received. How did it make you feel to solicit pointed feedback from others? How did it make you feel to hear what they had to say about your "Blind Spots" personally and professionally? What did you do to positively and productively process your feelings in the matter?

Purpose Examination

 Chapter 31

Purpose Examination

Construction Stage 4.4  Blueprints Review & Re-Visioning

SAL Model Stage 4.4   Purpose Examination

Just as a construction company must continually check and re-check their blueprints to make sure they are on the right track throughout the construction process, self-action leaders like YOU need to review your own SAL Blueprints—in the form of your SAL Declaration of Independence and SAL Constitution—from time-to-time to ensure you are "on purpose" and "on track" with your vision, mission, values, standards, and goals.

An important part of reviewing your Self-Blueprints is the process of Re-Visioning, which is defined as: the process of clarifying, expanding, and perfecting your SAL Blueprints over time

RE-VISIONING

The process of clarifying, expanding, and perfecting your SAL Blueprints over time.

The Re-Visioning process is something that will continue on indefinitely into the future as you continually evolve, grow, mature, and progress as a human being and self-action leader. Another term for Re-Visioning is PURPOSE EXAMINATION, which is defined as: the ongoing evaluation of—and adjustments to—your life's purpose.

PURPOSE  EXAMINATION

The ongoing evaluation ofand adjustments toyour life purpose.

How often should you review your SAL DoI and SAL Constitution to examine your life's purpose and Re-Vision your SAL Blueprints?

That is up to YOU.

The innate importance of this subject should make it a continual conversation in the back of your mind. In other words, you should be reflecting regularly—even daily—on your life's purpose and your SAL Blueprints.

Nevertheless, there is a difference between passing thoughts and casual contemplation and a formal revisiting and rigorous review.

How often, then, should your commit to formal reviews of your SAL Blueprints?

Based on your individual circumstances, needs, and desires, you may choose to formally review these documents weekly, monthly, quarterly, semiannually, or annually. In the beginning—immediately after you have completed your initial drafts—it is wise to review them more often in the beginning, such as weekly or monthly. However, as time goes on and you become increasingly familiar with and connected to the content of your SAL Blueprints, it is okay to begin spacing reviews out to quarterly, semiannual, and eventual annual reviews.

An annual review should be a minimum benchmark for all self-action leaders, no matter how aged or experienced.

As you review your Self-Blueprints, you possess sovereign authority to make revisions and/or additions as you see fit. In so doing, Freedom Focused strongly urges you to ensure that any changes are aligned with both your Conscience and the principles and practices contained in the SAL Theory and Model. If you fail to recognize, acknowledge, respect, and adhere to True Principles rooted in Universal Laws, the long-term utility and value of you Self-Blueprints will be limited.

The more time you invest in your SAL Blueprints, the clearer you will be on what your personal and professional purposes are, and the more motivated you will be to pursue your outlined targets.

Along the way, remember to be PATIENT with yourself.

I worked on my own SAL Blueprints for many years before they arrived at the relatively static place where they stand today. It took time—a lot of it—before I developed the vision and confidence I enjoy today, where I truly comprehend who I am and what I am about as a human being and self-action leader. And even now—in my late 40s—I continue to evolve, grow, learn, and mature.

The journey of Existential Growth never really ends.

It keeps on evolving, maturing, and progressing in beautifully desirable ways FOREVER.

In Your Journal

  • If you have not already formally reviewed your completed SAL Declaration of Independence and SAL Constitution, do so TODAY, or before the end of the week. Record in your journal any thoughts, ideas, or inspiration that came to you during the review process, and summarize the substance of any Re-Visioning you undertook in the form of additions, subtractions, or revisions.
