APPENDIX F: SAL Intended Audiences

APPENDIX  F

Intended Audiences of this Work

How to Use this Textbook in Educational,

Organizational, Home, and Personal Settings.

All human beings are personal leaders (leaders of self), whether they know it, like it, and care about it, or not. Moreover, all personal leaders have the potential to become self-action leaders if they desire and choose to do—and be—so.

This comprehensive Life Leadership textbook has therefore been written with a UNIVERSAL audience in mind; that is—anyone and everyone on the planet who is interested in self-improvement, individual growth, and personal change.

There are, however, seven (7) specific audiences for which this book may have particular appeal.

AUDIENCE #1:  Formal EDUCATORS, including: administrators, teachers, coaches, and support staff.

AUDIENCE #2:  STUDENTS of all ages in formal educational settings (classroom curriculum).

AUDIENCE #3:  INDIVIDUALS outside of formal educational settings (self-help manual).

AUDIENCE #4:  LEADERS, MANAGERS, and WORKERS of all kinds in all settings.

AUDIENCE #5:  PARENTS and FAMILIES

AUDIENCE #6:  PERSONS coping with mental, emotional, and social ILLNESSES.

AUDIENCE #7:  ELECTED OFFICIALS and other high profile LEADERS and ROLE MODELS.

This Life Leadership textbook has been designed as a comprehensive toolbox of principles and practices that these (and other) audiences can flexibly utilize as a resource to facilitate educational initiatives aimed at the self-improvement, character development, and personal growth of individuals, homes, schools, organizations, communities, states, and nations around the globe.

Individual sections below provide useful suggestions on how the material might best serve the seven (7) audiences listed above.

AUDIENCE #1Formal EDUCATORS, including: administrators, teachers, coaches, and support staff

BOOK the SEVENTH of this Life Leadership textbook provides a template curriculum for implementing leadership, character, and life-skill education into public and private schools. SAL-oriented principles can and should be flexibly and continually taught to children, teenagers, and adults of all ages and educational levels.

This particular textbook is best suited for highly literate high school and college-aged students and above. However, high-functioning and self-motivated middle schoolers—and even children—may also enjoy and thrive on the material.

The textbook itself is designed for use as either a seminal (primary) text in classes specifically tailored to Self-Action Leadership, leadership, or character development. However, it may also be flexibly utilized as an ancillary (secondary) text in a variety of other courses (e.g. English, history, psychology, health, philosophy, etc.).

AUDIENCE #2 and #3STUDENTS and INDIVIDUALS of all ages inside (and outside) formal educational settings.

Of all seven audiences covered in this appendix, none is more preeminent and primal than STUDENTS (individuals) of all ages. This is, after all, a TEXTBOOK and/or a self-help manual or guide.

While this particular text is best suited to the high school and collegiate levels (and above), basic SAL principles and practices can be flexibly tailored to help students of all ages everywhere to develop character in conjunction with achieving self-improvement and growth as a self-action leader.

AUDIENCE #4: LEADERS, MANAGERS, and WORKERS of all kinds in all settings.

The SAL Theory and Model is highly applicable to business leaders, managers, professionals, and workers of all kinds. Professionally speaking, the SAL Model's construction metaphor provides a vivid companion analogue to Principles of Project Management, whereby individual men and women themselves become "the project" at hand, with personal and professional change, growth, and improvement as the omnipresent objective.

SAL's comprehensive Life Leadership approach focuses on the whole person in an effort to avoid atrophy or failure in one area whilst busily attending to another area. In the insightful words of Ghandi: "[You] cannot do right in one department of life whilst ... occupied in doing wrong in any other department. Life is one indivisible whole." (1)

"You cannot do right in one department of life whilst
occupied in doing wrong in any other department.
Life is one indivisible whole."

Gandhi

SAL training empowers business professionals and workers of all kinds with the holistic self-development required to become effective servant leaders who are courageous, confident, and committed to the well- being of themselves and their family, organization, community, state, nation, and world. SAL training equips professionals with the principles and practices needed to integrate their personal and professional lives in a way that guarantees long-term success in both.

Ideas for Using the SAL Textbook in the Professional Workplace
  • Read and study the SAL Life Leadership textbook.
  • Complete the SAL Master Challenge.
  • After completing one's self-DoI and self-constitution, hold "Constitutional Conventions" for one's team, group, and/or the organization at-large.
  • Initiate conversations, conduct lunch and learn discussions, and provide other educational and training opportunities whereby the SAL philosophy, theory, and model, are taught, reviewed, and championed in team, group, and/or organizational settings.
  • Flexibly incorporate SAL principles and practices into group, team, department, and company-wide communications and cultures.

  • Continually return to the textbook to review, renew, and refresh your memory on SAL principles and practices.

AUDIENCE #5PARENTS and FAMILIES.

If individuals are the building blocks of society, families are the mortar and steel reinforcers that solidify those blocks into place. At Freedom Focused, we hold that there are no greater leadership or management positions than that of Father and Mother. And there is no greater duty and honor than that of bearing and raising another human being to full stature and maturity.

Sadly, poor—or even absent—parenting has become a pandemic throughout the USA and world, resulting in weakened nations, communities, organizations, schools, etc. Self-Action Leadership was developed in large part as a potential panacea to this perplexing problem. SAL by itself, of course, cannot parent anybody. However, parents who learn about, apply, and then teach SAL to their children can wield an incredibly positive and productive influence in a young person's life.

Governments and organizations themselves will never be able to effectively legislate good parenting. However, effective and loving parenting can and should be taught and modeled whenever and wherever possible. The SAL philosophy, theory, and model are worthy resources for this worthiest of all causes.

There are few things that parents and families can do that will more positively affect, influence, and impact their home lives than to learn, practice, and teach Self-Action Leadership. We therefore invite parents everywhere to read this comprehensive Life Leadership textbook, apply the principles and practices into their own lives, and then model and teach the material continually to their children.

We promise parents that by so doing, YOU will reap rich dividends of character development and relationship building in yourselves and your children.

  • Strive to exemplify SAL principles and practices at home and make restitution when and where you fall short.
  • Engage in service projects together as a family, both at home, in the yard, and beyond at church, school, or in the community.

AUDIENCE #6PERSONS coping with mentalemotional, and social ILLNESSES.

Having struggled mightily with mental, emotional, and social illness himself, this audience is near and dear to Dr. JJ's heart. As such, an explicit aim of this work has always been to provide aid, comfort, and hope to those struggling with mental illness or cognitive distortions of any kind, which, to one degree or another affects all of us at various points of our lives.

Self-Action Leadership was developed in part out of the many useful tools Dr. JJ used to combat his own neurosis and cognitive distortions involved with his OCD, anxiety, and depression. As such, they are proven strategies that really can help!

This Life Leadership textbook can serve as an inspiring message and useful guidebook for effectively combatting mental illness in conjunction with other therapies approved by your mental healthcare provider, thus empowering your ascent to the desirable, honorable, and attainable goal of mental health and hygiene. Dr. JJ—and all of us at Freedom Focused—sincerely hope and pray that this comprehensive Life Leadership textbook will prove helpful and hopeful to any and all who suffer with mental illness and are willing to read and study its pages.

As you peruse the ideas below for using this text within a mental health construct, remember to work closely with your mental healthcare provider to tailor an individual approach that is right for YOU. This includes tailoring your usage of the SAL textbook to your unique healthcare needs.

  • Share with your mental healthcare provider how you would personally like to use the material as part of your mental healthcare plan.
  • Working together with your mental healthcare provider, develop a plan for using the SAL Life Leadership textbook that harmonizes with your shared mental health goals.

AUDIENCE #7:  ELECTED OFFICIALS and other high profile LEADERS and ROLE MODELS.

Few persons hold more personal power and influence in our world than elected officials and other officers of secular governments. These persons wield an enormous impact on the vast majority other other, non-elected officials who reside within their dominions. Other, non-elected, but high profile persons of influence similarly wield much power in our world.

Sadly, far too many wield this power and influence in hurtful, negative, and deleterious ways—leaving a wash of cultural havoc in their wake.

At Freedom Focused, we call upon political leaders and all other high profile persons of authority, influence, and power to choose to become persons of principle—complete with a conscience and moral scruples—who play their parts as honorable and noble statesmen and women by consistently exhibiting the highest levels of personal character and professional integrity.

We invite all such persons to read and study this comprehensive Life Leadership textbook in a good-faith effort to discover how you can utilize the SAL philosophy, theory, and model to be the best leader you can be—an authentic and genuine role model of circumspect character and integrity. Doing so will inspire and assist you as you serve your constituents, seek to achieve personal transcendence, and leave a lasting legacy of positive, world-changing contributions.
