A Family LEGACY of JOURNAL Writing

Now that the serial online publication of the SAL Life Leadership textbook (begun nearly three years ago on September 23, 2023) is complete—and while we await the hardcopy TEXTBOOK publication due out later this fallit is time to turn the page on the analysis and presentation of my life's autoethnography and start a new project here on the Freedom Focused blog.

So, the question begs...

          What comes next?

ANSWER: The time has arrived to inaugurate a new and exciting literary undertaking: The piecemeal publication of my autobiography.

What is the difference between an AUTO-ethnography and an AUTO-biography, you ask?

The former—an autoethnographyinvolves a systematic presentation and analysis of one's personal history; while the latter—an autobiographyis simply a presentation of the chronological recordings themselves.

In other words, and put a little more simply: an autoethnography analyzes one's journals; while an autobiography is the journals themselves.

A world famous life coach and motivational speaker Anthony Robbins — has stated that if your life is worth living, it is worth recording.

"If your life is worth living, it is worth recording."

Anthony Robbins

My DAD: Rex Buckley Jensen with
his red-bound journals (1961-1981)
Robbins' quote serves as a succinct and apropos assessment of the universal value of journal writing—a richly rewarding activity that Freedom Focused enthusiastically encourages ALL human beings to engage in throughout their lives.

Today's blog serves as an introduction to four [4] additional articles that will immediately follow it... and many more that will come later on their heels.

The first two (2) of these articles will chronicle the journal legacies of, and pay homage to, two (2) members of my family who have been as diligent and detailed (if not more so) in their personal journaling and record-keeping habits as I have been.

The first of these family members is my father, Rex Buckley Jensen (1943-present).

The second is my younger sister—the youngest of my parent's seven childrenJessie Ruth (née Jensen) Allen (1981-present).

My SISTER: Jessie Ruth (née Jensen) Allen with
her scrapbooks and maroon-bound journals (1996-2026)
Both of these family members have each produced such a prodigious, extensive, and impressive collection of personal journals and other life records that they deserve an exclusive article of their own heralding their monumental lifetime efforts and achievement.

In granting such exclusive honor upon these two individuals, I wish to note that Dad and Jessie are certainly not the only record keepers in my immediate and extended families.

For example, my paternal grandmother (Dad's mom) had similar record-keeping habits that she clearly passed on to my father, although her means and methods were more epistolary, genealogical, pictorial, and personal history-based than they were daily diary-oriented.

Moreover, others of my siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents have served as models that inspired my father and sister and me in our own extensive and expansive record-keeping proclivities and habits.

One couple in particular—my Aunt Donna (née Nielson) and Uncle Stephen Jensen—have been unusually diligent in producing their own detailed personal histories.

Donna has further completed several additional volumes chronicling the lives and legacies of her parents, grandparents, etc. Such caring creations and labors of love personify the journaling spirit I hope to animate through my work with Freedom Focused and the Self-Action Leadership textbookA Textbook and Journal for Life.

To all such persons I express my deep and sincere gratitude, honor, respect, and love.

This 317-page personal history was created by my paternal uncle,
Stephen L. Jensen, and published in 2017.

This 320-page work was created by my paternal grandmother,
LaVerda Barton Jensen (1919-2006) in the last years of her life and published circa 2004.

This 156-page work was also created by my paternal grandmother,
LaVerda Barton Jensen in 1975.

This 370-page work from my maternal grandmother's side of the family was created
by The Job Pingree Family Organization and published in 1983.

This 375-page volume from my maternal great-grandmother's family was
produced by my Taggart cousins and published on October 25, 1997.

This 256-page book of life stories about my Mom was compiled under the
direction of two of my siblings: Joseph Ned Jensen and Jessie Ruth Allen.

Self-RECORDING

 Chapter 9

Self-RECORDING

Construction Stage 1.5   Planning and Scheduling

SAL Model Stage 1.5   Self-Recording

"If your life is worth living, it's worth recording."

Anthony Robbins

JOURNALING is one of the most important
practical skills a self-action leader
can practice on a regular basis.
Self-recording refers to the art and science of calendaring, and more especially to JOURNALING.

It is metaphorically analogous to planning, scheduling, and tending to other logistical details involved in constructing a skyscraper. Just as a building company must coordinate numerous particulars in the execution of a construction project, YOU must likewise plan, schedule, and coordinate the daily minutia involved in leading, managing, and constructing your life and career.

Self-recording activities empower you to work out and refine your ideas, make them more concrete and detailed, conceptualize plans of action, and then draw it all up in an organized manner.

It also affords you the opportunity to become a self-historian and gain the insights and other benefits of self-awareness derivable through deep introspection.

In addition to aiding your recall of past events and details, self-recording is also useful for reviewing and analyzing your ongoing progress as well.

JOURNALING is great
for your MEMORY
Journaling is also marvelous for your MEMORY.

To wit: Folks sometimes comment on my own accurate and prodigious memory, and I have my prolific journaling habit to thank for it—at least in part.

If you were a diarist or journaler before diving into this Life Leadership textbook, that is great! If, on the other hand, your first foray into regular journaling was in your SAL journal, that's okay! If you still have not started a personal diary, journal, and/or SAL Journal, I invite—and strongly urge you—to begin one today.

Some people (like me) like to save their journals in word processing and spreadsheet files, or online as a web document or blog. Others prefer to write it out the old-fashioned way by putting pen to paper in a notebook or leather-bound journal. Some prefer scrapbooking, photo albums, audio recordings, videography, or some other modern tool and technique for self-recording.

How you do it is of secondary importance.

The important thing is that you DO IT!

We at Freedom Focused encourage you, of course, to record your SAL Journal right here inside this Life Leadership textbook, where a lot of blank space has been reserved for this very purpose. However, if you are an extra dedicated and enthusiastic diarist, you may want to make this text just one of several places in which you engage in self-recording activities.

Composing a diary or journal deepens and improves your introspective processes, self-awareness, self-analysis and examination, personal planning, and writing skills.

It also helps you gain a greater sense of your life's meaning and purpose.

Every self-action leader's planning system will be unique.
In addition to these many benefits, Journaling provides therapeutic benefits to your emotions, psyche, and soul. This is because it is an ideal place and medium where you can safely vent and otherwise process angry, frustrated, or hurt feelings in a low-risk environment. Ample anecdotal evidence exists to suggest that journaling contributes to higher levels of emotional intelligence, mental hygiene, and Existential Growth.

Calendaring and day planning—electronically or via paper—are also key components of self-recording. If you plan something and write it down, you are more likely to remember and then keep your commitments. And like journaling, how you choose to proceed with the process itself (e.g. computer, paper, smart phone, etc.) is of secondary importance to just doing it.

So...

Put together a system of tools that works well for you, and then, as the old saying goes:

Plan your work; and work your plan!

In Your Journal

  • Now that YOU are at this stage of the SAL Textbook and Master Challenge, and have gained some experience writing in your SAL Journal, reflect on what your journaling experience has been like so far.
  • Have you noticed any benefits or blessings that have accompanied your journaling efforts to date? If so, what are they, and what further favors and fortunes do you believe might follow your future journal writing efforts?

SAL Master Challenge

EXERCISE  #9

Self-action leaders ORGANIZE, PLAN, and JOURNAL

1.  If you don't already have a system for calendaring and planning, organize and prepare a system that works for you and then start using it TODAY.

2. If you haven't already done so, begin a new journal—separate from your SAL journal—in the medium of your choice by composing a fresh entry for TODAY.

3. Determine how often you plan to write and then maintain your writing momentum by meeting your regularity goal.

REMEMBER: Your personal SAL Journal is private. You are therefore FREE to write openly and honestly about your anxieties, fears, thoughts, feelings, hopes, dreams, goals, et cetera.

For Example:

  • Daily task (to-do) list
  • Daily record of events
  • Thoughts
  • Feelings
  • Fears
  • Frustrations
  • Ideas
  • Inspiration
  • Hopes
  • Dreams
  • Loves
  • Joys
  • Challenges and obstacles
  • Pains and struggles
  • Pet peeves
  • Epiphanies
  • Breakthroughs
  • Values
  • Vision
  • Goals
  • Standards
  • Etc.
