Celebrating America's 250th Anniversary

Happy 250th Birthday, America!

I am, always have been, and always will be a passionate patriot of my beloved homeland—The United States

I love my country.

Having visited all 50 States, I have experienced firsthand her breathtaking beauty and the goodness, hospitality, and warmth of her citizens.

Moreover, I have spent much of my life studying its unique and storied history, and I appreciate the liberty, freedom, and opportunity it has afforded me throughout my life and career.

I am therefore thrilled to join millions of my fellow citizens in the semiquincentennial (250 year) celebration of its inspiring inception on July 4, 1776.

Next Saturday marks a very special day of commemoration—the kind of celebration that only happens a few times in one's lifetime.

Born in 1979, I missed America's bicentennial celebration (200th birthday) in 1976 by three years; and if I live to see its tercentennial (300th anniversary) in 2076, I will be nearly 97 years old!

Suffice it to say, such a notable and prominent moment in my nation's history should not pass by without rich, ample, grateful, and heartfelt tributes to its past, present, and future greatness—and the august founders who brought it forth by the aid of divine Providence.

It is true that my nation is not perfect—no nation is. It is also true that its founders were flawed mortals—are not we all?—who did not always share, much less embrace every value we hold dear in the twenty-first century. But did not the founders themselves accede this fact, and was not the purpose of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution to form a country capable of becoming a "more perfect union" over time

Moreover, have we not made continual—not to be confused with continuous—progress in realizing this stirring value and vision throughout the course of our glorious and unprecedented history?

Despite any (and all) the flaws of our past founders or present leaders and citizens, there is no question we are a great nation that has made much progress—and will continue to do so in the future as long as we remain committed to the existential truism that "all men are created equal" and attend to the duties we all share to continually improve upon our own past efforts, speaking both individually and collectively.

Thus, I feel both comfortable and confident in saying that despite the darkness and dilemmas of our day, America's very best years still lie ahead of her (and us), not behind us.

1858-1919
It is in this attitude, spirit, hope, and faith that I chose to found Freedom Focused back in 2005, and why I continually seek to perpetuate its influence and reach throughout my nation and world. For America's future greatness—and the greatness of any other country—will rest upon the character, integrity, and principle-centered conduct and leadership of its individual citizens.

In the glorious words of Theodore Roosevelt, spoken at the Sorbonne in Paris on April 23, 1910:

The Quality of the Individual Citizen is Supreme!

Thus, the character and life skill development of self-action leaders remains perennially relevant and effervescently crucial. Indeed, Self-Action Leadership has never been more important than it is in 2026.

I am therefore thrilled to provide my nation and world with a comprehensive personal leadership guide and handbook that is rooted in constitutional principles and INDEPENDENCE. After all, without liberty, there can be no true freedom—and it is no secret that we at Freedom Focused have been, are, and ever will be focused on FREEDOM and TRUTH with a Capital "T."

Speaking of which, I wish to provide my readers with a brief update on the publication of the landmark 7th Edition of the SAL Life Leadership textbook—an academic, literary, and inspirational beacon of character, liberty, FREEDOMpatriotism, and personal leadership.

I completed this work's manuscript earlier this year and submitted it to its publisher on March 13, 2026.

Ideally, I would have liked to see the publication release date coincide with my nation's semiquincentennial celebration on July 4, 2026—or as close to this date as possible. However, the logistics of publishing such a massive tome have, not surprisingly, proven more time-intensive than originally planned.

Abraham Lincoln
1809-1865
Rest assured, dear reader, that no effort has been spared to ensure this work is as near-perfect as possible when it finally rolls off the press. As such, its publication release date has been moved back several months. It's availability is now anticipated for sometime this fall.

I deeply cherish the fact that Providence has seen fit to time the release of this landmark life leadership guide during the year 2026, the 250th anniversary of my nation—a country that was, in the stirring words of President Abraham Lincoln: "conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."

In truth, this Life Leadership "Bible" will never be "complete" in my lifetime. Just as there were six (6) iterations and revisions that preceded this year's release, there will eventually be an 8th edition, then a 9th and 10th, etc. Much like the U.S. Constitution and my nation itself, this work will continue to be amended and improved—a work in progress—as it grows ever more perfect over time.

But, in the meantime, I am pleased beyond measure to give my nation and world the fruit of my personal and professional efforts over the past 25 years, and to a lesser extent the 22 years before that.

Indeed, it is not an overstatement to say that I have dedicated both my life and career to this work.

Suffice it to say, the project has been no small undertaking—and will, in its time, have no small impact and influence on my nation and world.

Of this I am certain.

And if, by the grace of God, I am permitted to live to age 97 and participate in the 300th anniversary of The United State of America, I look forward to reflecting gratefully on the positive difference SAL will have made in the minds, hearts, and souls of each individual touched by the truth and power of its eternal principles.

REMEMBER: There is nothing inherently special about lil ole' JJ (me). But everything is special about true principles rooted in universal law as outlined in the SAL Philosophy, Theory, and Model. As such, anyone else who chooses to embrace SAL principles and practices as I have will find similar benefits and blessings over time.

That is simply a mathematical fact!

I will publish another blog announcing this textbook's official release. In the meantime, I invite you to review the book's front and back covers below...

A Letter to America and the World on the Serial Publication of SAL

A Letter to AMERICA & the WORLD
Freedom Focused is pleased to announce the Serial Publication of the Self-Action Leadership Textbook, right here on our weekly blogging platform.

This exciting project will begin next week on September 6, 2023, at our regular publication time on Wednesday morning. It will continue each Wednesday after that until the entire textbook is available online. This process will take approximately 24-30 months to complete.

As PREFACE to this exciting initiative, Dr. JJ has penned a personal missive to the citizens of his nation—The United States of America—as well as his fellowmen and women throughout the rest of the world, as follows...

To my Home Country I Love
and to My Home Planet I Care a Great Deal About:

A Letter to America and the World
From Jordan R. Jensen, Ed.D.
To my family members, friends, colleagues, fellow citizens, and everyone else within sight of this letter, I extend my warmest greetings from Freedom Focused headquarters down here in sunny South Florida!

Since I was just a little boy growing up in the 1980s, I have always felt a deep sense of individual responsibility and personal destiny. These feelings have been continually accompanied by a profound sense that I have been charged with a mandate to contribute something of widespread significance that would serve and bless my fellowmen and women throughout my nation and the rest of the world.

As a teenager, I became obsessed with concepts of influence and leadership, which developed into an increasingly deep desire to impact other people in positive, productive, meaningful, transformative, and lasting ways.

As a young adult in my twenties, this sense of individual duty and metaphysical weight of personal mandate—in addition to the authentic desires of my heart—became specific and clear: I was to model, teach, proliferate, and promote PERSONAL LEADERSHIP and CHARACTER EDUCATION to students of all ages, everywhere... for as long as I lived.

I have spent the past 20 years doing everything I could think of that would accomplish this overarching objective within a framework of my unique personality, individual circumstances, personal aptitudes and proclivities, and of course limitations as well.

These effortsor in other words, my career resume to dateinclude the following:

  • Earned a bachelor's degree in English from Utah Valley University in 2003.
  • Trained middle school, high school, and collegiate students around the U.S. (in 10 different States) on personal leadership topics from 2003-2009.
  • Wrote and published a 300-page book on Personal Leadership for a teenage/young adult audience in 2005-06.
  • Trained thousands of adult professionals throughout the U.S. (44 States), the UK (9 Counties), and Canada (5 Provinces) on a variety of communication, management, leadership, and other professional soft skill topics from 2007-2016.
  • The FIFTH (5th) iteration/edition
    of the SAL Textbook
    Published in 2015
Taught a year of high school English (and character education) in a large public high school in Houston, Texas (2009-2010) and spent four years as a part-time substitute teacher (and character educator) in Cobb County, Georgia (2006-2009).
  • Earned a Doctoral degree in Education from Fielding Graduate University in 2013.
  • Developed an original Theory & Model of Personal Leadership and Character Development called Self-Action Leadership (SAL) as part of my Doctoral dissertation research.
  • Wrote and/or self-published five (5) different complete iterations of a comprehensive personal leadership TEXTBOOK based on the SAL Theory and Model in 2005, 2007 (unpublished manuscript), 2012 (dissertation), 2013, and 2015.
  • Wrote four academic journal articles on the SAL Theory and Model that were published in the Journal of Leadership & Management in 2015, 2018, and 2020.
  • Published a variety of other articles and book chapters or sections in academic textbooks, journals, and other periodicals.
  • Started a blog in 2013, in which I have published 343 articles to-date.
  • Reached out to tens of thousands of leaders, educators, teachers, coaches, and others over 20 long years in an effort to promote the message of SAL.

Life is full of surprises, and things rarely turn out exactly the way you expect them to.

For me, the biggest surprise of the past two decades has been the lack of response I have gotten for this diligent expenditure of calculated, determined, and focused effort. This dearth of response has not been for any lack of trying on my part. Indeed, I have spent tens of thousands of hours and reached out to tens of thousands of leaders, educators, and others in a tireless effort to spread the message of SAL. For a variety of reasons (known and unknown) the "seeds of SAL" have, to-date, almost entirely fallen upon stoney ground, withered in the heat, or been gulped up by passing birds.

A beloved baseball movie, Field of Dreams, famously promotes the mantra that, "If you build it; people will come." I've always believed in this mantra. While not many people have come to embrace the SAL Theory and Model yet, I remain confident it is only a matter of time before they do. This confidence stems from the fact that SAL principles and practices have transformed my own life and career in remarkably positive and productive ways, so I know it can similarly help countless others as well.

Dr. JJ's letter to America & the World

Thus, when/as others are ready, SAL and I will be waiting for them.

Fortunately, life has taught me to be a patient man.

While the external results from these ongoing efforts have been negligible to-date, my internal growth, maturation, and preparation has continued unabated all throughout the process. Much of this metaphysical magic has occurred along the way as I've courageously confronted challenges I never expected to face, such as serving as a stay-at-home-dad for a significant chunk of my most productive career years (ages 36-44 and counting), and managing various forms of mental and emotional illness since my early teen years.

Thus, for the past 35 years, my own life has been under operation in the real-world laboratory of SAL instruction, development, and transformation, and the internal results speak for themselves—even though the external successes remain largely forthcoming. In addition to practicing what I preach, I have over long periods of time, steadily become what I preach—however imperfectly; and I'll be the first to admit I've still got a long way to go along my own never-ending journey of "Existential Growth," which is a term that refers to one's holistic personal, professional, and moral progress as a human being.

Nevertheless, in the aggregate, the ongoing SAL experiment in my own life has been wonderfully successful. As a result, I don't merely teach or model SAL; I have become SAL. Indeed, you might say that I am SAL, a state of being that has infused my life and career with beauty, confidence, fulfillment, glory, honor, satisfaction, success, and perhaps most importantly, inner peace.

Notice that I don't include anything about perfection in the foregoing list of desirables. Indeed, I am still very much a work-in-progress—frustratingly so at times! But I've come far enough in my journey to know that it's worth risking everything in an all-chips in gamble on SAL in terms of what it can do for both me and others I love and care about.

Suffice it to say, I stand before you today as not only a living witness of the power of SAL in one's life and career, but a metaphysical personification thereof, which has turned me into a very rich man—particularly in the ways that matter most, like inner confidence and courage, quality family life and personal relationships, and ongoing peace of mind about my long-term future. These riches are so desirable and rewarding that I would not trade such internal credibility and confidence for all the external honors, positions, and monetary remuneration in the world.

After all, becoming is what SAL is all about in the end.

I taught my first personal leadership (forerunner of SAL) seminar at Lassiter High School in Marietta, Georgia in the fall of 2003 to a group of young student leaders.

Twenty years, tens of thousands of hours of developing, refining, polishing, and six editions later, I am pleased to announce the serial (weekly) publication of the SAL Textbook in its entirety right here on the Freedom Focused blog, which will serve as the 7th Edition since I Am Sovereign: The Power of Personal Leadership was self-published back in 2005.

This means that the most comprehensive secular LIFE LEADERSHIP handbook available in the world today is coming your way at no charge!

Perhaps you are wondering why I am going to just give all this valuable information away for FREE, and why now?

First off, from a practical standpoint, no one currently wants to buy the texts. They are quite expensive in their present, academic publishing format; unfortunately, most traditional textbooks are not cheap!

Moreover, in 2023, few people have the desire, much less the focus and self-discipline to read long and challenging books, no matter how interesting, helpful, or inexpensive they may be. I believe this will change in time, but it will take time—and likely some catalytic external triggering events—to usher in a cultural change capable of significantly altering this current cultural conundrum.

Perhaps publishing the information serially online will garner more attention to the material and its value in the lives of students of all ages. Who knows... it may even help me sell more hard copy books in the future. But this is a matter of mere secondary importance to me.

Why?

Because, my greatest desires for this work have never primarily involved money. Lucre is, at best, a fickle and fleeting friend. While it may "rank right up there with oxygen" (Zig Ziglar) in terms of its practical importance for basic survival, it really doesn't have any lasting meaning or value to me personally beyond meeting my temporary needs and providing me with freedom and opportunity in this world. In other words, money only matters to me if I don't have enough of it to survive and live comfortably. Since I have enough money to meet my basic needs and cover a few modest wants, it doesn't really matter that much to me anymore.

Furthermore, my self-valuation is not based on how much money I make. Rather, it is based on how productive I am in using my talents to accomplish meaningful work that benefits others—in conjunction with how moral my actions are all throughout the process. After all, productivity and moral conduct is where all authentic self-esteem comes from.

I have been enormously productive the past 20 years. Moreover, I have striven with all my heart to conduct myself in a morally circumspect manner. I therefore have excellent self-esteem both personally and professionally. In fact, given the world's (and especially the West's) current cultural, educational, and moral climate, the biggest compliment to my work to-date may very well be that it has not gained any significant traction yet! It is a sad, but true assessment of where we currently stand—speaking collectively and not individually.

And that is precisely why SAL is so desperately needed throughout the United States and World!

Despite any and all of the cold (and shrugging) shoulders we have received over the years, our long-term vision at Freedom Focused has not changed, nor will it ever change.

Our VISION is to transform Western Culture to reflect the standards, values, and mores contained in the SAL Theory & Model

It's a vision that is simple to state, but difficult—and incredibly time-consuming—to engage. This is not surprising, since all of us—myself included—are impatient and resistant to change to one degree or another. Nevertheless, I will not cease from stating our purpose and striving to engage it, come what may, to the end.

I continue to work steadily in faith that the message will eventually spread according to its destined time; and at this point in my life and career, I'm not overly concerned about what that timeline ends up being. Once again, life has taught me to be a patient man. My only real priority is that I continue true to the end in faithfully fulfilling my personal duty to simply be the best self-action leader I am capable of being. After all, the first lesson of SAL is that we cannot control anyone else but ourselves. And we usually have our hands full just trying to keep ourselves under control...

I know I do!

I am a very instinctual leader, and about nine months ago it dawned on me that the time had come to ensure the SAL message is recorded ONLINE in its entirety where it will forever remain for those who will eventually seek it out in the future. After all, the hope of future readers is one of the things that has fueled my motivation to publish all these weekly blogs... 343-and-counting since 2013. Plus, I authentically LOVE my work, so regardless of the size of my audience at present, I genuinely enjoy what I do—and you can't put a price on the value of that!

Since I have always been more interested in influence than in money, it makes sense I would take this action for the sake of everyone in my nation and world I love and care about both now and forevermore.

The SAL Textbooks in their current, hardcopy format
published by
Cambridge Scholars Publishing
I am excited about this new initiative. It will not only provide others with affordable, unabridged, and unfettered access to the entire SAL curriculum, but it will also provide me—a tireless reviser of my own work—with the chance to turn out an improved seventh (7th) comprehensive iteration of the material since I published my first book on the SAL Model back in 2005.

I will then be able to further revise as necessary for the rest of my career—at the click of a button and the pressing of a few keys. This work has gotten better with each iteration, and it will continue to improve as long as we keep striving to perfect it.

It will take approximately two-and-a-half years to complete the serial publication of this 1,000-plus page work. At the end of this extensive undertaking, I will re-publish the revision (7th Edition) in a self-published format that will be much more affordable than it currently stands as a costly academic text. Perhaps that will further motivate others to buy hard copy texts for themselves and their children, students, and subordinates to read, study, work through, and benefit from.

Despite the tremendous complexity, detail, and nuance of this extensive and expansive academic work, my aim, focus, vision, and goals for it are simple and have never changed all these 20 years. The purpose remains to provide students of all ages with a comprehensive training handbook in personal leadership and character education. It's that simple in theory; and it's that difficult in practice.

As M. Scott Peck famously wrote: "Life is Difficult." (1)

The online, serial publication of the
SAL Textbooks begins next week
     Peck is right!

Nevertheless, as perplexing and painful as life may be, none of us are destined to be miserable. As the old saying goes...

"Pain is inevitable; but misery is optional."

I have suffered a great deal of pain in my life. I'm sure you can relate! Some of my pain has been self-inflicted. Again, I'm sure you can relate!

Most of my pain, however, has been the result of various crosses I have been called upon to bear, such as OCD, depression, and personal (and career) stallings and setbacks. Despite suffering through my own lion share of pain, rarely have I been truly miserable in any pronounced or prolonged sense.

Why?

     Because of SAL.

And that's the beauty and glory of this primal topic of inquiry and practice. SAL isn't going to erase all problems and pain from your life. But it will equip you with the principles and practices that will lead to growth, maturation, and progress over time—all of which will empower you to maximize your personal and professional potential to live a life of happiness, success, fulfillment, and inner peace.

To those precious few of you who are actually reading this letter on August 30, 2023, YOU are one of "the few and the proud" (even if you are not a Marine). I thank you from the bottom of my heart for being an "Early Adopter" of this creative, groundbreaking, and unprecedented work. Someday, when you are old and gray (or bald) and there are a billion hard copy SAL Textbook scattered around the globe in a hundred different languages—in the homes, schools, and organizations of all who desire authentic and holistic Existential Growth—you can tell your kids that you were reading Dr. JJ's blogs back in the day when he couldn't sell one of his textbooks to save his life!  (SMILE)

And speaking of selling SAL Textbook, one of the most important lessons I've learned over the years is that I really don't need to sell it. Why not? Because the importance and value of the material is wholly self-evident to anyone who genuinely desires legitimate Existential Growth for themselves or their children, students, or subordinates AND is willing to earnestly seek it out.

And therein lies the rub... in the end, it's all about desire. In other words, educators and/or student-practitioners must sincerely want the information badly enough that they are willing to seek it out and proactively engage it. It's not something you can successfully shove down someone's throat anymore than you can force the Bhagavad Gita, the Bible, the Book of Mormon, or the Quran down someone's throat.

Just as people have to genuinely want spiritual enlightenment, human beings have to authentically desire Existential Growth, which is nothing more than the secular equivalent of spiritual growth. It simply cannot be forced! In the end, everything comes down to DESIRE and FREE WILL. That is, after all, just one of many reasons why we at Freedom Focused are, well, so wholly Freedom Focused in all that we think about, say, and do.

The message, of course, still has to be shared, which is what I've been doing rather diligently for the past 20 years, and what I will continue to do every Wednesday morning here on this blog for as long as I remain at the helm here at Freedom Focused, which is where I intend to be until at least the early 2040s.

There is nothing inherently special about Dr. JJ
But everything is special about SAL.  What will
YOU choose to do with it now that you
have been granted full access?

Whenever you do end up reading this letter or other portions of my work as the author of the SAL Theory and Model, I hope you find it to be as helpful and hopeful as I have in my own life and career. Because if you do, and if you are willing to back up your intentions with committed action over time, you are destined to be the recipient of unspeakable blessings, favors, opportunities, rewards, and successes to come.

I know this is true.

     How do I know?

Because I have been, am, and will continue to be just such a recipient.

Remember: there is nothing inherently special about me; but everything is special about SAL principles and practices, including the lives and careers of all who choose to embrace them! Thus, the following question always lingers: will YOU choose to become a self-action leader? I sincerely hope that your answer to this question will be a resounding "YES"!

Yours in SAL...

     Now &

          Forever.

Dr. JJ's Rule #3: The Golden Mean

There is Beauty in Balance
In a previous article, JJ's 13 Rules for Living were shared. This week's blog post addresses Dr. JJ's RULE #3, which states:

Truth and virtue are rarely found in extremes, but in a balance between (or among) extremes—in the Golden Mean.

The great Greek philosopher, Aristotle, taught that virtue (or "THE GOOD") is not found in extremes, but in a balance between (or among) extremes. This Aristotelian principle of balance has since become known as the GOLDEN MEAN.

At Freedom Focused, our aim is to embrace Aristotle's Golden Mean in everything we say and do.

The GOLDEN MEAN and POLITICS

In recent years and decades, the United States of America—and other countries around the globe—have seen a growing political and cultural polarization stymie its/their collective social health and systemic functionality. As hyper-partisan candidates and citizens pursue increasingly extreme positions on both (and all) sides, divisiveness has abounded, negatively impacting everyone in one way or another.

Suffice it to say, perhaps nowhere is the philosophy of the Golden Mean needed more than in the politics of the twenty-first century.

Freedom Focused is a non-political organization and does not endorse political candidates. We do, however, encourage everyone to become involved in the political process—if only to cast a vote—according to your own understanding of the issues and the dictates of your own conscience. We further encourage all citizens to become better educated on present political issues and historical events and political precedents. Doing so will serve to inform your knowledge- and conscience-based participation in the political process.

I personally am not a member of any political party. However, as a concerned citizen, voter, and patriot who loves my country and seeks to be a good and honorable citizen of my homeland (and world), I strive to follow our advice as stated above. I therefore choose whom I will vote for based on my research, observations, and analysis of current issues, my understanding of past events and political precedents, and my personal priorities and beliefs.

There are times in a two-person race when both candidates are unpalatable to me for various reasons. In such circumstances, I always cast my vote for the candidate whom I believe will—all things considered—do the most good and the least harm in office.

This "utilitarian-minded" voting approach is rooted in my desire to exercise what little political influence I possess as practically and realistically as possible in the present. I then concurrently seek to exemplify and promote the kind of balanced approach to politics that this article champions—something that politicians increasingly refuse to do themselves. When it comes to "contested issues" I seek to follow the advice of one leader who encouraged citizens to "moderate and unify"* rather than embrace partisan extremities and other tribalistic ideologies and behaviors.

The GOLDEN MEAN and Everything Else in Life

Everything goes better when the "gears" of your life and
career are properly aligned, balanced, and greased.
The golden mean relates to more than just politics; it is applicable to everything in life. Freedom Focused agrees with Aristotle that self-action leaders ought to avoid extremities of any kind. While there is usually an exception to every rule, the fundamental principal of the Golden Mean is that wisdom is almost never found in extremes; but in a balance between (or among) extremes.

In every life arena—be it spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, social, recreational, etc.—we should strive to live lives marked by balance, discretion, moderation, and wisdom. Even inherently good or healthy things, such as exercise, nutrition, study, work, and wholesome recreational activities can be taken to unhealthy extremes that hinder one's personal freedom and growth and harm interpersonal relationships.

In illustration of this point, I am reminded of one of my favorite songs sung by the contemporary pop star, Bruno Mars. In his famous tune, Just the Way You Are, Bruno croons: "Her lips, her lips, I could kiss them all day if she'd let me."

As is the case with many romantic lyrics in music, they tend to get out of balance in order to underscore a highlighted emotion.

Don't get me wrong... I love to kiss my wife as much as the next husband (and perhaps even more so), but kissing Lina all day long would not be good for her, me, or our relationship. While I firmly believe kissing is an essential ingredient in a successful romantic relationship or marriage, balance remains a key component in keeping those kisses as meaningful and special as possible. Indeed, too many kisses could in fact be as damaging and dangerous as not enough kisses.

Aristotle
384-322 B.C.
How many friendships and marriages have been ruined by imbalance!

In a nation and world where legions of citizens are embracing extremes in fashion, style, culture, ideology, politics, fitness, nutrition, and virtually everything else, Freedom Focused champions a different approach that we—like Aristotle—believe is better and wiser in the long-run. This approach is spelled "B-A-L-A-N-C-E" and is illuminated by a philosophy and principle championed over two millennia ago by the great Greek philosopher Aristotle.

Here's to living a golden life of happiness, prosperity, and inner peace through the philosophy of the Golden Mean.

Huzzah!

A Proposed Antidote to Current Cultural and Educational Quagmires in the United States—and Beyond

Dear Reader:

I was recently invited to (virtually) deliver a 20-minute presentation on Self-Action Leadership at SWPS University in Warsaw, Poland.  Today's post provides a published transcript of this address (see below).

Those interested in watching the video presentation can access it by clicking HERE.

Self-Action Leadership

A Proposed Antidote to Current Cultural and Educational Quagmires in the United States—and Beyond.

To my good friends and esteemed colleagues at SWPS University in Warsaw, Poland—and beyond—I extend my warmest greetings to you from my home office in sunny South Florida, USA.

The title of my presentation today is: Self-Action Leadership: A Proposed Antidote to Current Cultural and Educational Quagmires in the United Statesand beyond.

As a multi-generational American, I am a proud citizen of the United States—in the same way that I hope you are proud citizens of Poland. Despite the patriotism for my homeland, I am not ignorant of the veritable mess my nation has gotten itself into in recent years in the realms of POLITICS, CULTURE, and EDUCATION.

The purpose of my presentation today is to present what I believe is a fundamental and universal antidote to the core issues that make up my nation's current cultural and educational quagmire. I focus primarily on the United States simply because I am an American citizen and am therefore most familiar with the issues presently facing my country. However, I desire further to present this material as a similar antidote to comparable issues that exist in nations throughout the West, and to a lesser extent, the world at large.

I am aware this claim may come across as audacious, if not downright naïve. And I recognize that my proposition is indeed daring. But whether or not it is dupable will be up to YOU to decide.

Before proceeding, I wish to say a word to my wonderful Polish friends. It is truly an honor for me to speak to you today. Why? Because when a person speaks to citizens of Poland, they address an audience whose heritage includes a rare and special variety of audacity, courage, and resolve. Indeed, as deep, dangerous, and entrenched as America's past and present troubles have been and are—I feel confident in saying there is little (if anything) that Americans could ever teach Poland about national adversity—or the need to stand up, speak out, and fight against racial or ethnic hatred, tyranny, and evil.

In this regard, yours is truly a unique and terrible, yet remarkable history. Consequently, I have great respect—and hold in high regard—the tremendous sacrifices your people have made in ages past, and the extraordinary resiliency YOU have shown in succeeding generations—as your beautifully rebuilt and glistening modern cities so proudly demonstrate. Thank You, Poland, for your example, both historically and contemporarily, of what it means to rebound from trials, never give up in the face of difficulties, and press on forever in the pursuit of individual and collective excellence.

There are a variety of causes to my Nation's present political, cultural, and educational ills. And if you turn on any news channel in America, there is no shortage of sophisticated politicians, pundits, and cultural warriors ever-ready and over-willing to name those causes and point the finger of blame and shame upon their political enemies, their cultural adversaries, historical narratives, and whomever or whatever else they have targeted as being the driving force behind said problems.

Unity is easily talked about; but not easily achieved

The purpose of my presentation today is to take an entirely different course. Rather than fight, I seek to UNITE on the altar of individual excellence and personal CHANGE and GROWTH.

This may sound simple enough in theory, but in actual practice, TRUE UNITY takes much more than mere rhetoric to accomplish. It requires sincere, genuine commitments and old-fashioned hard work over long periods of time to truly realize. No speech, no matter how eloquent or polished can come close to getting beyond a mere beginning to the extensive process required to achieve authentic unity, especially in a nation as large and diverse as the United States.

Nevertheless, because of the importance of the cause, we believe it is entirely worth pursuing, come what may. But rather than start a new fight, perpetuate an old squabble, or point the finger of blame, my goal is to present a positive, productive, purposeful, and hopefully persuasive panacea—or at very least a palliative salve—to these many issues and deep wounds that afflict so many in my troubled nation—and beyond.

My antidote is called SELF-ACTION LEADERSHIP, and my entire purpose is to invite and encourage individuals everywhere to stop pointing the finger of blame outside toward someone (or something) else, and to start looking deep inside within one's own mind, heart, and spirit to see how each of us might begin the slow, gradual, and sometimes painful—but oh, so necessary and rewarding—process of SELF-CHANGE.

Professional pundits in America—in conjunction with legions of not-so professional lay citizens—often speak in inflammatory tones as if they have the power to change others by virtue of their own loud, angry, and embittered rhetoric. It's almost as though they believe that engendering change in another is simply a matter of out-shouting, or out-insulting, one's opponent. But cooler and wiser heads must always accede the FACT that SELF-CHANGE is, in reality, the only REAL CHANGE there is. As such, the only person on the planet that any of us can really control—and by extension, change—is ourselves.

Thus, the only real solution to our deepest problems in America and beyond is to refocus our attention and our efforts within rather than without. This is not to say that problems do not persist without; of course they do—and always will! It merely aims to refocus our attention on that unique focal point where each of us maintains maximum control, which is within our own minds, hearts, and spirits. As individual men and women, boys and girls change, improve, progress, and grow as individuals, they will, by extension, become positive agents of change in families, teams, organizations, and communities as well.

The time has come to stop putting the proverbial "cart before the horse." Micro changes must precede macro changes; that's just the way things operate in reality. Self-change is what SELF-ACTION LEADERSHIP aims to accomplish. It is that simple. And it is also that difficult!

Leadership begins with the leadership of SELF
SELF-ACTION LEADERSHIP—or just SAL for short—is the name of a new scholarly field of Personal Leadership studies. It is hewn out of the academic fields of leadership and character education, and more specifically, out of the pedagogical arenas of Self-Leadership, Action Research, and Autoethnography.

For those unfamiliar with these topics, SELF-LEADERSHIP refers to the cognitive and behavioral leadership of self; ACTION RESEARCH is a four-step, cyclical process of problem solving and change; and AUTOETHNOGRAPHY involves the academic study and scholarly scrutinization of one's personal history.

SELF-ACTION LEADERSHIP acknowledges a great and primal truth; namely, that in order to effectively manage or lead a group, team, or organization, YOU must first be able to successfully manage and lead YOURSELF. It also openly confesses a difficult truth: namely, that all of us—including managers and executives at the very highest levels of an organization or nation—often struggle with their own Self-Action Leadership.

That is the BAD news.

The GOOD news is that everyone can choose to learn, grow, improve, progress, and change over-time as an intentional SELF-ACTION LEADER.

But how?

How does one become an intentional SELF-ACTION LEADER who is determined to grow, improve, progress, and change in an ongoing, upward-cycling process throughout one's life?

The answer to this question lies in the Self-Action Leadership Theory, Model, and Philosophy.

Where can one find the SAL Theory, Model, and Philosophy? The short answer to this question is found in FOUR (4) scholarly papers that were recently published in the Journal of Leadership and Management. The long answer to this question is found in the Self-Action Leadership TEXTBOOKS, Volumes 1 & 2. Volume 1 contains the SAL Theory; Volume 2 contains the SAL Model. Both volumes can be purchased at Cambridge Scholars Publishing or by visiting www.freedomfocused.com

For generations now, higher education in America has been the envy of the world. But is it still? And will it be a generation from now at the current rates of American educational atrophy and cultural decline? There are, of course, differing opinions to this question, but at Freedom Focused, we believe and assert that the future of education in America (and beyond) remains bright. Moreover, we believe America's educational future lies not in becoming more nuanced, sophisticated, and partisan, but rather in returning to certain fundamentals of character development that have not changed since the ancient Grecian pedagogies of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, which, interestingly enough, is where modern scholarly debates about character education first took root in Western Civilization.

To address this belief and assertion, we present to the world the Self-Action Leadership Theory, Model, Philosophy, Academic Papers, and Textbooks.

The SAL Philosophy reminds a student that he or she is ultimately responsible for everything in his or her individual world (meaning one's life and career), whether one's present circumstances are a direct consequence of one's own choices, or not.

The SAL Theory takes students on a metaphysical journey through nine levels of holistic growth, progress, and change. These nine levels are represented metaphorically by the surface of the Earth and the various layers of the atmosphere on up to the deepest regions of Outer Space.

Along the way, students discover the extensive and expansive potential they possess as a self-action leader—regardless of their "unchangeables" (viz. race, history, birth, socioeconomic standing at birth, natural aptitudes, actions of others beyond one's control, etc.)—to become a person of great capacity, contribution, and success.

The SAL Model then teaches students how to apply ACTION RESEARCH to their own SELF-LEADERSHIP in an ongoing manner—a process that provides the fuel required to rise up to higher levels of EXISTENTIAL GROWTH as delineated in the SAL Theory.

The SAL Academic Papers provide scholarly grounding points for—and add academic credibility and legitimacy to—the SAL Theory, Model, and Pedagogy.

The SAL Textbooks, Volume 1 & 2 clearly and cogently articulate the SAL Philosophy before taking students on a detailed and motivating journey through the metaphysical adventures contained in the SAL Theory and Model. The SAL Textbooks further provide students with an opportunity to practically apply SAL principles and practices by completing 25 different homework assignments scattered throughout the texts. Students who complete all of these homework assignments, otherwise known as the "SAL Master Challenge" will receive a certificate, medal, and non-accredited diploma for their efforts.

Most importantly, the Textbooks guide students in the drafting of their own Self-Declaration of Independence and Self-Constitution. In this process, individual men and women, boys and girls liken to themselves those powerful and non-partisan principles outlined in the founding documents of the United States—documents that nearly every other country on Earth have since imitated. The results of these exercises can be incredibly personal, productive, powerful, and motivating. I know because I've experienced all of these things in my own life and career as I've drafted—and then lived bymy own Self-Declaration of Independence and Self-Constitution.

These incredibly meaningful exercises remind students everywhere that it was not political parties, or western culture, or favorable geography alone that gave rise to the Superpower of the last 75 years. It was a natural consequence of America's willingness—however imperfectly—to adhere to the core principles outlined in the Declaration of Independence and Constitution in a never-ending pursuit of establishing a "More Perfect Union." Just as America became great by striving to live up to the Standards set forth in its Founding Creed, it will only remain great by revisiting and recommitting to those same Core Principles and Practices.

Where did the SAL Philosophy, Theory, Model, and Textbooks come from?

Good Question!

That's where the AUTOETHNOGRAPHIC part of the scholarly formula enters the equation.

I jotted down my first journal entry when I was SEVEN (7) years old. I was in grade one at the time, and was just barely learning to write, so typos abounded in that first attempt penned back in 1987. But I kept at it and got better!

Thirty-four (34) years, thousands of journal pages and letters, a 1,150-page Doctoral Dissertation, seven (7) books, and hundreds of published articles later, I have diligently studied and carefully scrutinized my own personal history with a conscientious, detailed, and disciplined intensity the likes of which very few humans have ever done.

Along the way, I have learned and mastered whatever was necessary to overcome prodigious challenges and breathtaking personal and professional adversity in my life, relationships, and career.

I'm still far from perfect, but as my friends and associates will tell you, I've come a long way... thanks in large part to the principles and practices contained in the SAL Philosophy, Theory, and Model.

But this is not all. The good news is that there is nothing inherently special about me; but everything is special about the principles and practices contained in the SAL Theory and Model. As such, I concurrently turned this entire self-project into a programmed template that any other human being can potentially utilize and benefit from in like manner as I have.

This SELF-ACTION LEADERSHIP package is now complete and ready for worldwide dissemination as fast as educators and students desire it and proactively seek it out. As such, we invite educators, scholars, leaders, parents, and citizens everywhere to investigate SELF-ACTION LEADERSHIP for themselves, their students, and their children.

Don't take our word for it. But access the material. Carefully study it. Then ask yourself: is this what America—and the rest of the world—needs to rise above our current cultural and educational quagmires to enter that higher and nobler place we are capable of attaining?

If, after following this course, the answer is "YES," then we invite you to join us on an individual and collective educational and existential odyssey the likes of which this world has never before seen.

It has been said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. The SAL equivalent to this aphorism might be: "The journey to world peace, prosperity, and unity beings when I choose to change my own mind and heart and concurrently dedicate myself to both self-improvement and to loving and caring for my fellow human beings around the globe."

Self-Action Leadership has the potential to change not only America for the better, but the entire world. Indeed, we believe the day will come when students everywhere will be studying the Self-Action Leadership Textbooks in the same way that they presently study language, mathematics, history, science, and technology.

Perhaps the suggestion of such a profound and transformative shift sounds naïve and hyperbolic, to say the least. Maybe we are; and maybe it is. But we'll never know if we don't try. As Steve Jobs—the Founder of Apple Computers—once quipped: "The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are [usually] the ones who do."
