Developing an Integrity-Based Character

 Chapter 16

Developing an Integrity-Based Character

CONSTRUCTION  STAGE  2:  BUILDING the FOUNDATION

SAL MODEL STAGE 2:  DEVELOPING an INTEGRITY-BASED CHARACTER

"Integrity is the essence of everything successful."

R. Buckminster Fuller

Having completed the pre-construction phase, it's now time to start building the foundation of your life as a self-action leader. Stage Two (2) of the Construction Process involves FIVE (5) different steps.

CONSTRUCTION  STAGE  2:  BUILDING the FOUNDATION

  • Conducting geological surveys
  • Drilling down to bedrock
  • Anchoring concrete/steel piles to bedrock
  • Pouring a steel-reinforced concrete slab
  • Earthquake and weather proofing

The construction of a skyscraper's foundation takes place underground where it will typically remain unseen after the project has been completed.

Your CHARACTER is similarly forged in subterranean territory (out of sight) in moments and locales not witnessed by many (if any) others.

After a skyscraper's superstructure has been built, the strength or weakness of the building is not visibly evident. But just because it is unseen doesn't mean it doesn't matter. Quite to the contrary, if the foundation is weak, cracked, or otherwise compromised, the integrity of the entire structure will be undermined.

Likewise, if your character is fickle, fissured, shallow, or weak, you will experience existential atrophy instead of growth—no matter how attractive your life's cosmetic facade may appear to others.

The structural integrity of a skyscraper's foundation is critical to the long-term endurance and utility of its superstructure. If a building's foundation is properly constructed, it will pass the tests of time, extreme weather, and even natural disasters.

The strength of any kind of superstructure (house, barn, building, skyscraper, tower, etc.) begins with the strength of its foundation. To ensure construction integrity, geological surveys and other engineering surveys and safeguards must be sound and thorough. Foundation piles must reach down to bedrock and be anchored therein. Concrete must be properly mixed, reinforced with steel, set, and cured.

All of these steps have existential equivalents and analogues in the SAL Model.

My Uncle Hyrum often equated character with "Will Power" (1) and defined INTEGRITY as: "the ability to carry out a worthy decision after the emotion of making that decision has passed." (2)

"INTEGRITY is the ability to carry out a worthy decision

after the emotion of making that decision has passed."

Hyrum W. Smith

The integrity-based CHARACTER that Freedom Focused promotes in the SAL Model is similarly action-oriented and will-powered.

Developing personal INTEGRITY is not easy. It requires that you demonstrate commitment, consistency, dependability, discipline, focus, persistence, and trustworthiness over long periods of time.

M. Scott Peck, M.D. once captured the challenging, yet essential, nature of integrity when he wrote: "Integrity is painful. But without it, there can be no wholeness." (3)

Stage Two (2) of the SAL Model involves Developing an Integrity-Based Character. Specifically, the SAL Model contains FIVE (5) corresponding step-habits analogous to this foundational construction stage.

SAL  MODEL  STAGE 2:  DEVELOPING an INTEGRITY-BASED CHARACTER
  • Honesty
  • Humility
  • Reverence
  • Rectification
  • Service

In Your Journal

  • What does INTEGRITY mean to you?
  • In what ways are you currently demonstrating INTEGRITY in your life and/or career?
  • In what areas of your life could you develop stronger CHARACTER and more reliable INTEGRITY?

Paying the PRICE to Become a CHAMPION

In my last blog post, I explained what sets SAL apart from other personal development programs on the market.  Today’s email sheds further light on these important distinctions.

After a leader has formulated an intelligent plan that respects Natural Law, HARD WORK becomes the indispensable variable in achieving results and obtaining success.  When it comes to being the BEST—or more importantly, your BEST—there is simply no substitute under the sun for good old-fashioned sweat equity.

All of the world’s most accomplished geniuses understand this principle, which was perhaps best articulated by that incomparable inventor Thomas Edison, who quipped that: “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.”

Regardless of raw talent or access to capital and other resources, TRUE CHAMPIONS are always the ones who want victory the most and are willing to work the hardest to be victorious.  They demonstrate their determination through an undeviating commitment to the goal—and more importantly, to the process that leads to the goal.  They are consistent, persistent, and unrelenting.  They are also always learning and tweaking their approach along the way.  Most importantly, they do not merely persist until a major roadblock crosses their pathway.  They persist until they succeed—come what may.

They NEVER, ever, EVER GIVE UP.

Champions comprehend the price tag attached to authentic growth, achievement, and victory.  Consequently, they do not cut corners in their efforts to succeed.  They diligently adhere to the “Law of the Farm” (Stephen Covey) and “Do not Skip any Steps” (Michael Jordan) in the process.  They also recognize that in the long-run, losing is part of winning.  Therefore, they are not afraid to lose.  Recognizing that the only true failure is to give up on a worthwhile endeavor, their biggest fear is that they will fail to try or put in the necessary effort.  In the inspiring words of basketball’s GOAT, Michael Jordan:

“I have missed over 9,000 shots in my career.  I have lost over 300 games.  Twenty-six (26) times I was trusted to take the game-winning shot—and missed.  I have failed over and over and over again in my life; and that is why I succeed.”

Champions put in the time required to achieve greatness.  You are probably familiar with the “10,000-hour rule” made famous by Malcolm Gladwell’s bestselling book, Outliers.  Champions understand this rule and earnestly seek to put in whatever time is required to succeed at the highest levels.

I know from my own experience the veracity and vitality of the “10,000-hour Rule.”  Regardless of any raw talents or natural proclivities I may possess, I know for certain that there is no substitute for the approximately 20,000 hours I have invested in writing, speaking, and teaching over the course of the past 30 years of my education and career.

This point was confirmed by a piece of feedback I received from a fellow writer back in 2014.  This writer had reviewed the first edition of the SAL textbook, which was self-published in 2006 and targeted a high school audience.  After reviewing some of my blog posts eight (8) years later, she emailed me and said, “Jordan: I just had to write and tell you that your writing is about 10,000 times better than it used to be.”  It was interesting how she employed the number 10,000 in her compliment.  While certainly hyperbolic, she made her point both clearly and symbolically.

Why had my writing improved so much over the course of those eight (8) years?  Because I had been working diligently on the skill and had spent thousands of additional hours studying, practicing, and teaching the art and science of written composition over the course of those eight years.  I had paid the price to become an elite professional in my field.  That was over six (6) years ago, and I have spent several thousand additional hours writing since 2014.

One of the most significant variables that sets the SAL Textbooks apart from other personal development books is that it was not written just once.  Instead, it was written and published SIX (6) times over the course of 14 years—in 2006, 2007, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2019.  Not only did my own writing vastly improve over that time period, but I also got the input, feedback, and observations of many others who were able to spot things I missed, and otherwise assist me in a variety of areas that greatly improved the overall product.  As such, you can imagine the extent to which the 2019 version has improved upon the 2006 edition.

Why?

Answer:  Time, effort, sacrifice, growth, maturity, and consultation with others.

It's simple in theory; but the actual time must be invested to realize real results.  The price must always be paid for authentic and significant success in school, sports, or life.

There is no other way!

The beauty of the
SAL Textbooks is that unlike most self-help or personal development material or programs, it invites students to not merely read or review the material in an attempt to get temporarily “pumped up.”  Instead, it challenges students to REALLY STUDY it over extended periods of time in a committed effort to put in the time to become a TRUE CHAMPION.

Bottom Line: The ART and SCIENCE of becoming a CHAMPION requires diligent STUDY over long-periods of time.

That’s just the way things are.

Of all the subjects taught in our high schools and universities, where is the most important class of all?  You know, the one that teaches students how to effectively navigate LIFE ITSELF?  Where is the course that trains young men and women to think critically about the leadership and direction of their own lives?  Among the countless subject offerings in our nation’s many colleges, why are the weightier matters of character, conduct, conscience, and leadership so routinely flouted in favor of a whole menagerie of fringe topics that do very little (if they do anything at all) to improve student’s lives—and empower them to positively and productively influence the greater community and world beyond?

For those who intuitively recognize the self-evident reality that such courses ought to be just as important as reading, writing, and arithmetic, a comprehensive course on LIFEand its leadershipfinally exists.  Self-Action Leadership, Volumes I & II, serve as the Textbooks for this course.

Check out previous versions of the SAL Textbooks below (2006, 2013, and 2015, respectively).  We've come a long way since 2006!  The 2007 version was entitled "Leaders for Life" and was set to go to print by a publisher who dishonestly reneged on our signed contract.  Such is life.  Lesson learned: never work with that guy again.  The 2012 version was my doctoral dissertation.

A Class in Life

Imagine for a second that it is the year 2030.

One of your children (or grandchildren) is about to begin middle or high school.  After she has completed registering for her classes, you survey your daughter's (or son's) academic course load for the upcoming school year, and it looks something like this...

1st Period:  Algebra
2nd Period: English
3rd period:  Biology
4th period:  Technology & computing
5th period:  Art
6th Period:  Physical education
7th Period:  Life LCLS 101

As you review the schedule, you notice that the first six classes resemble your own prep school schedule back in the 80s, 90s, or early 2000s.  But then you get to seventh period and are a little confused.  So you ask your child, "What the heck is Life LCLS 101?"

Without thinking, your child blurts out, "Oh, that's just life class; it's where we study leadership, character, and life-skills; you know, the stuff we need to know to be successful in REAL life. Everyone is required to take at least one life course every semester; it's required for graduation. Our principal and teachers are always telling us it's the most important class we attend each day."

"Oh," you reply.  "Cool."  Pause...

"I wish they had had that when I was a student."

Purveyors of Education in
Leadership, Character, & Life Skills
If Freedom Focused has anything to say about it, this mostly theoretical scenario in today's educational world will be standard operating procedure for an increasing number of elementary, middle, and high schools—as well as colleges and universities—by the 2030s.

How will it happen?  Slowly.  Gradually.  Incrementally, but surely.  Freedom Focused exists for the express purpose to ensure that it does.

As the Founder and CEO of Freedom Focused, I have always envisioned our organization as being something akin to a 21st century version of FranklinCovey.  But what exactly would a contemporary version of that famous turn-of-the-century day planner company look like?

In some regards, Freedom Focused will look a lot like FranklinCovey.  For example, we will initially build our business on book sales, seminar receipts, and consultation fees.  Later, as we grow and earn greater leverage, we will add additional products and services aimed at promoting personal, professional, and global freedom through Self-Action Leadership—our trademark training philosophy, theory, and model

Like FranklinCovey, we may someday have retail stores that sell books, training materials, and other related products.  Moreover, professional training and consulting services will always form part of the core bedrock of our business model.  This, however, is where the convergence ends and the divergence begins.

How then, will Freedom Focused be different?  How will we distinguish ourselves from FranklinCovey and other professional training companies like it?

At Freedom Focused, our primary concern is
transforming what happens in classrooms across America
The answer to this question lies in our focus.

Instead of aiming primarily at corporate audiences, our fundamental focus will involve the Educational World of communities, schools, homes, and individual lives.  This means that if we had our choice between securing business with every Fortune 1000 Company in the nation, or signing educational contracts with every public school district in the U.S., we would choose the educational contracts over the corporate deals.  This is not to say that we will neglect corporate interests; far from it; nevertheless our primary, long-term objective is to make inroads into traditional classrooms and other educational-based venues.

Why would we do this when there is far more money to be made in Corporate America?  The answer is simple: our vision at Freedom Focused transcends making money.  It is also larger than merely helping individuals and organizations to be more effective.  Our vision is to influence a widespread shift in the culture itself, bringing about an end to philosophical postmodernism (moral relativism) and leading the onset of philosophical authenticism (moral absolutism).

Changing a culture is not an easy endeavor; it does not happen quickly.  The only way to generate authentic cultural shifts that last is to infiltrate educational systems beginning at the lowest levels (pre-k and elementary), then on to the middle levels (secondary and collegiate), and finally up to the highest levels (graduate and professional).

Our preeminent vision at Freedom Focused is to change Western society and culture by successfully entering educational systems everywhere as advocates, purveyors, and providers of physical (scientific) and metaphysical (moral) Truths.  To get the ball rolling in this direction, we have developed the world's first ever comprehensive, secular, textbook for life that introduces students to philosophical fundamentals that, if learned and consistently applied, will lead any student-practitioner to long-term growth, success, and happiness.

This TEXTBOOK is called, Self-Action Leadership, Volumes I & II.

Far from being a typical self-help book, Self-Action Leadership is a philosophically-oriented academic text rooted in careful and conscientious doctoral research.  It is specifically designed to serve as a seminal, secular text on self-leadership and character education that can be used in classroom settings and beyond.

As the author of this text, I spent 13 years of my life carefully researching, observing, and revising to ensure this text delivers on its promise to influence quantum cultural changes that will signal a new era of peace and hope marked by a resurgence of collective character through personal integrity in the United States and beyond.

The best way to begin accomplishing this mammoth undertaking is to first popularize a message—and text—that can serve as an example and model of what leadership and character education in our schools should look like. And what should it look like?  It should be secular, non-partisan, non-ideological, and rooted in academic research and experiential common sense.

This text has now been written.

We invite you to buy a copy today and read it—with your eye single to the LOVE you have for your children, grandchildren, and someday, your great-grandchildren, as well as the HOPE you hold for their future.

Click HERE to buy a copy of Self-Action Leadership.

Down the road a ways, Freedom Focused will continue to diverge from FranklinCovey's original business model by offering full-service, holistic health gyms, comprehensive mental health centers, a leadership, character, and life-skill focused accredited university—Freedom Focused University—outreaches to the homeless, poverty-stricken, and mentally ill, and an artistic, theatrical and motion picture company that produces art, music, stage, and cinematic productions in harmony with our vision of proliferating personal, professional, and global freedom by developing integrity in pursuit of authentic, holistic, personal growth.

Such marvelous dreams can yet become reality; but they must follow on the heels of other, more fundamental developments.  For now, our task is to put first things first, and our FIRST task is to proliferate and popularize the philosophy and message of Self-Action Leadership.  For that to happen, the message has to be read and then shared.  We invite you to help us get the ball rolling in the direction of Freedom by buying our book, signing up to receive our blog articles, and visiting our website at www.freedomfocused.com

SELF-ACTION LEADERSHIP is the key catalyst for initiating transformational leadership that lasts in any organization. The truth of the matter really is that simple; and the transformation of organizations through the holistic development of individuals really is that difficult—yet altogether possible for anyone willing to invest the time, effort, and sacrifice required to achieve authentic, transformational results.

Unlike any training program that has ever preceded it, Self-Action Leadership provides a single vehicle wherewith individual self-leaders can discover—and then act—upon the great truth that HOLISTIC personal development and growth spanning the mental, moral, spiritual, physical, emotional, social, and financial elements of our individual natures is within the grasp of each one of us.

NoteFreedom Focused is a non-partisan, for-profit, educational corporation. As such, we do not endorse or embrace political figures. We do, however, comment from time-to-time on historical or political events that provide pedagogical backdrops to illuminating principles contained in the SAL Theory & Model.

The Power to Change

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.[1]
– Dr Seuss

I can change.

Something Worth Doing Before Dec. 31st

With my marathons now behind me, it is time to turn my attention to more important matters… MUCH more important matters.

If I were a betting man, I’d wager good money on the fact that you love your Country and are concerned about the direction it has been heading.

And I’d guess that over the years, you have received no small portion of e-mails from well intentioned people seeking ardently, but less effectively, to do something about it by letting their voice be heard by forwarding along partisan propaganda filled with partial truths, half truths, or even outright lies that their senders failed to properly vet before forwarding them along to you.

Celebrating America's 250th Anniversary

Happy 250th Birthday, America!   I am, always have been, and always will be a passionate patriot of my beloved homeland— The United States ....
